Fabric Care Guide
As all of our fabrics are deadstock fabrics sourced from the designers and not the manufacturers, we are not usually given any care instructions for them and we aren't always certain of the exact fibre content. Hopefully our guide below will give you an idea of the best way to take care of them at home.
General Tips
- We always suggest pre-washing or shrinking your fabrics before starting a project so your newly sewn garment stays the perfect shape after its first wash.
- For fabrics that fray or unravel easily, consider finishing the cut edges with your overlocker or a simple zigzag stitch before washing.
- Fully open up your fabric before washing to prevent creases forming.
- If you feel unsure, it's always best to test your method on a smaller piece of your fabric.
- Iron your fabrics before cutting out to prevent any distortion of the pattern
Fibres
Cotton : machine wash on 30/40ºc, can be tumble dried on a low setting. Iron on a high heat
Linen : machine wash on 30/40ºc, can be tumble dried on a low setting. Iron on a high heat. Linen becomes softer the more times it is washed.
Silk : dry clean or hand wash with a gentle soap. Iron on a low heat
Wool : dry clean or preshrink using steam from your iron. Remember not to agitate the fibres as this can cause felting.
Viscose : machine wash on 30ºc, do not tumble dry. Iron on a low heat.
Polyester: machine wash on 30/40°c, do not tumble dry. Iron on a low heat.
Knits/Jersey : machine wash on 30/40°c, can be tumble dried on a low setting. Iron on a warm heat. If it has a fleece backing, iron on the reverse.
